Pitch Smarter, Not Harder

In a perfect world (or on the TV show Nashville) you would have a publisher who would run all over town playing it for every producer and A&R rep at all the major labels! Okay, so back to reality! Nowadays, most of us songwriters are out there pounding the pavement dropping off CDs to anyone we know who will listen!

I actually got my cut with the Dixie Chicks by dropping of “Let Er Rip” to Blake Chancey at SONY Records…
So I know it can be done!

TO SAY THE COMPETITION IS TOUGH IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT!

However, you can improve your odds of getting a cut if you know who to pitch to!

I pitched my song to the Dixie Chicks because:

A. They were relatively unknown at the time, so all the BIG songwriters weren’t really pitching to them!

…but, more importantly:

B. The Dixie Chicks were NOT writing all the songs themselves!

So, the biggest tool a songwriter can have is the knowledge of which artists are out there that will probably be recording outside songs! No matter how good I think my song is, I am probably not going to pitch a song to an artist like Taylor Swift…she writes everything herself!

My good friend and song pluggerJeffrey Nelson decided to invest a ton of time and researched the current crop of country artists to see which artists cut the most amount of outside songs on their recent projects.

He then designed a 5-page report called “Country Artists Who Cut Outside Songs” with tips and information about which artists are presently looking for songs! It features one column he calls the “O.S.P.” (Outside Song Percentage) which lists the amount of outside songs (not co-written by the artist or the artists’ producers) that were cut and released on these major artists’ most recent albums.

I subscribe to several pitch sheets – Row Fax ($179 a year), Song Link ($385 a year), etc. All of these provide information on artists that are looking for songs. However, none of them tell me which major label artist record a lot of outside material! The 2016 version of Jeffrey Nelson’s spreadsheet will be available for my SongTuner clients for just $50!
